Younis Khan will guide Afghanistan to the 2025 Champions Cup


Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been appointed as the team's mentor Afghanistan Cricket team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This is Younis' second stint with the team. He previously served as hitting coach in 2022.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, ACB spokesperson Saeed Naseem Sadat shared details about the appointment. “ACB has appointed highly experienced former Pakistani player Younis Khan as mentor for the Champions Trophy 2025. He will join the team before the event begins in Pakistan,” Sadat confirmed.

The Champions Cup will start on February 19. Afghanistan's first match will be against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi.

Legendary career

Younis Khan's cricketing credentials are nothing short of legendary. Over the course of his remarkable career, Younis Khan scored 10,099 runs in 118 Test matches. His highest score was an astonishing 313 against Sri Lanka. Younis has over 7,200 runs in ODIs as well.

In addition to his striking achievements, Younis occupies a special place in… PakistanCricket history to lead the team to its first ever match T20 World Cup Victory in 2009. He remains one of the most respected figures in world cricket.

Periods of training and experience

Since his retirement from international cricket, Younis has taken up various coaching roles. He briefly served as batting coach for the Pakistan national team, passing on his wisdom to the next generation of players.

His coaching journey also includes stints with Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and a head coaching role with Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Younis has a great understanding of Pakistani pitches. Afghanistan has performed well recently in ICC events. With Younis at the helm, Afghanistan hopes to reach the knockout rounds.
