Hideki Matsuyama shot a second straight 65 to take a one-stroke lead at the halfway point of the season-opening PGA Tour in Hawaii.
The former Masters champion had dealt eight birdies as he reached 36 holes at The Sentry with just one bogey on his card.
His 16-under-par score at Kapalua leaves him one point behind fellow major champion Collin Morikawa, who recorded five straight birdies from the 13th in his 65.
England's Harry Hall birdied four of his last five holes en route to a 65 that took him into a group at 13 under par, which also included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark, who carded 64.
Maverick McNeely, who matched the lowest round of the day with a 64, and overnight leader Tom Hogue are among those one stroke behind Morikawa, along with Canadian Corey Conners after 66 seconds straight and Belgian Thomas Detry.
“I have two jobs,” Bradley said. “My only job here, and then my other job is to be captain and captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
“I really enjoy being the leader – and I love playing golf. So it's not hard stuff. It's definitely stressful, but I enjoy both.”
Scottish Robert McIntyre scored 66 points in the second round, reaching 10 points under par, two points ahead of Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick after 65 points.
“I'm definitely satisfied with where I'm at,” Matsuyama said. “Obviously the views are beautiful here.
“I haven't played well here in a while, so it's good to get off to a good start here.”
