Sporting dismisses Joao Pereira to replace Ruben Amorim and appoints Rui Borges

Sporting Sporting appointed Rui Borges as coach of the team after the dismissal of Joao Pereira, who spent more than a month in charge of the Portuguese club following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

Pereira took over as coach of the Lisbon team Shortly after Amorim left to become coach of Manchester United In November, but he faced a difficult period at the helm of the team.

Sporting lost four of their eight matches under Pereira, a form that saw them eliminated at the top of the Portuguese league, with rivals Benfica jumping into first place.

Borges left Vitoria Guimaraes to become coach of Sporting, signing a contract until June 2026, with an option to extend for a further year.

“The time is right for me,” said Borges, whose first match will be against Benfica on Sunday.

“That's always true. I'm very positive, and I believe things happen when they have to. It's an opportunity we've all worked for.”

Amorim led Sporting to win the league title last season and left for a new challenge at Old Trafford after United sacked Erik Ten Hag.

Borges now faces the challenge of seeking another title and said: “I am the captain of the Portuguese champions and I could not be happier. I look at the team and it is the best. It is not time to even talk about signings.”
