South Africa finally broke Pakistan's resistance on the fourth day of the second Test to complete a 2-0 win and go top of the World Test Championship table.
After 421 runs behind, the tourists showed much greater determination in the second over to reach par and set the Proteas a small target of 58 in the final session of the day.
South Africa made light work of the target, with former Durham batsman David Bedingham – who moved up the order from fifth – smashing 44 off 30 balls.
The victory in Cape Town was built on a huge first innings total of 615 runs, with Ryan Rickleton top-scoring with 259 points.
They enforced the follow-on after beating Pakistan for 194 runs, but Shan Masood's 145 added some respectability.
Babar Azam scored 81 in a first-wicket stand of 205, but Kagiso Rabada (3-115) and Keshav Maharaj (3-137) missed out despite additional resistance from Mohammad Rizwan (41), Salman Ali Agha (48) and Aamir Jamal. (34) is in the lowest order.
South Africa's win ensures they head to June's World Test Championship final against Australia after topping the table in the two-year tournament.
“The players are looking forward to it,” South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said. “It won't be easy (beating Australia) but we will enjoy this moment, celebrate it and deal with it as time approaches.”
Fast bowler Rabada said South Africa were confident of lifting the trophy, telling Sky Sports: “It's always been tough competition between South Africa and Australia because we play quite similar cricket – we play hard. They will come hard, we know that.” But we also know how to defeat them.”
