Swiss Olympic skier Sophie Hediger died in an avalanche at the age of 26, the Swiss Ski Federation announced on Tuesday.
The member of the Swiss national snowboarding team was involved in the accident in the mountain resort of Arosa on Monday.
“We are speechless, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences,” said Walter Rosser, Chief Sports Officer at Swiss-Ski.
“For the Swiss-Ski family, Sophie's tragic death has cast a dark pall over the Christmas period. We are deeply saddened.”
Hediger competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and had two World Cup podium finishes in the 2023-24 season.
Meanwhile, the union said it would keep further details about her death, as agreed with her family and partner.
