Ruben Amorim: Manchester United coach says his players are 'very worried and very afraid'

“They are anxious, and sometimes afraid, on the field,” Amorim said of his players. “We have to deal with that.”

“We are starving for leaders on the pitch,” United's Portuguese coach said on Friday as he praised defender Harry Maguire for his comeback from difficult times.

He added: “We need leaders to come forward to help other players, and I am the most responsible person here to improve performance.”

“You can see that the players are trying, sometimes they are very anxious, very afraid to play football because this is a difficult moment and we will help the players to be better.”

United, who are 23 points behind Liverpool after playing one more game, have not achieved a win at Anfield since January 2016, when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal in the match.

Meanwhile, United have failed to score on the past five visits, with their last goal at the stadium coming in December 2018.

Despite his team's alarming performance, Amorim said that better times are coming for United and its fans.

“I will do my best,” he said. “I am doing everything I can to help the club and we will succeed. I know it is difficult to understand at this moment, but we will succeed.”
