Manchester United: Marcus Rashford will miss the Liverpool match due to illness

Amorim has confirmed that striker Amad Diallo is close to agreeing to extend his contract with United. He also said the club would exercise the option to extend former captain Harry Maguire's current contract until 2026.

Imad was one of the best performers during Amorim's 11-match coaching spell.

The most notable events came when Imad scored the winning goal in the Manchester derby last month at Etihad Stadium.

The Ivorian's current deal expires in the summer, and while United have the option of a year-long extension, there have been negotiations over a deal extending until 2029.

“Amad is close,” Amorim revealed.

Maguire was appointed captain during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time at the club but was stripped of that honor by Amorim's predecessor Erik ten Hag, who gave the job to Fernandes instead.

The England defender resisted attempts by Ten Hag to sell him to West Ham and eventually regained his place until injury ruled him out for the latter part of last season, costing him an FA Cup Final appearance and a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024.

Maguire's current contract is also set to expire in the summer.

However, while confirming that Maguire will stay at Old Trafford for an additional year, Amorim is also demanding more from the 31-year-old, after revealing there are no leaders in his squad.

“We are starving for leaders on the field,” Amorim said.

“I spoke to him and told him he has to improve his game on the pitch. He also has to improve as a leader.

“If you want to be a top team, you have to be a leader, and we have that in the dressing room, but they have to step up.

“You can look at the table but you're still Manchester United, so that gap and that pressure from a top team at a really low moment is difficult to overcome, so we need the more experienced players to help the others.

“We all know the situation he was in here, but we need him so much and we are happy to activate this option.”
