Jake Whiteman eyes Scottish 3000m title in Glasgow

Former 1,500m world champion Jake Whiteman will be looking to prove he has overcome last year's injury problems when he kicks off the 2025 season by testing himself in the 3,000m in Glasgow on Saturday.

The 30-year-old Scot, who won the world title over the shorter distance in 2022 but was forced to withdraw from last year's Olympics in Paris, heads north from his base in Manchester to compete in the Scottish 3,000m Championships at the Emirates Stadium.

The Glasgow Athletics Association's Miller Meet combines the New Year Bash, high jump, long jump, shot put, triple jump, pole vault, and a series of 800m and 3000m events from 14:00 GMT.

The men's and women's races – three 800m and 11 3000m – will be run at different levels until Whiteman takes the title in the final of the first race at around 16:40.

Among his opponents in the men's main race will be fellow British international Callum Elson, England's Cambridge and Coleridge team-mate Thomas Bridger and Morpeth's James Young.

Set to compete for the women's title are Edinburgh AC's Elsa Palmer, Laswadi's Sarah Tate, Edinburgh University Hare & Hounds' Sarah Calvert and Cambuslang Harriers' Stephanie Tucker.

Taking part in the 800m races are Scottish internationals Hannah Cameron from Aberdeen AAC, and Jill Cherry from Victoria Park City in Glasgow.
