“Still the critics continue to rave. Glenavon, nothing but Glenavon….
“The Duns will never keep up the pace. A small team from the Alliance, for goodness sake they weren't racing.”
It is known as one of the biggest shocks in the history of League of Ireland Football.
For some, he may be the greatest of them all.
The 1955 Irish Cup Final pitted a victorious and star-studded Glenavon side against Third Division side Dundela.
In that season alone, Glenavon had already won three titles and were leading the Irish League with the trio of Jimmy Jones, Johnny Denver and Stuart Campbell scoring an incredible 101 goals for the Lurgan Blues.
They also had the legendary Wilbur Couch, who was a Northern Ireland international, in their ranks and Maurice McVey, nicknamed 'Twinkle Toes' for his ability on the ball.
It should have been a formality, but few could have predicted what would happen.
Windsor Park were stunned as Bobby Irvine pushed the underdogs from the AFL into the lead.
Dondella wasn't finished there either. Irvine scored the second goal five minutes from time, and shock turned to disbelief as Jackie Greenwood sealed the win with the third goal.
Glenavon's challenge on all fronts came to an abrupt halt, and to this day it remains the most famous day in the Dons' 130-year history.
