Australian T20 veteran Dan Christian has made a surprise return to the Big Bash League (BBL), stepping in to support an injury-plagued Sydney Thunder side.
The 41-year-old, who last featured for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL12, has returned to action after a brief hiatus from professional cricket. His return couldn't have come at a better time for the Thunder, who are struggling with a growing list of injuries to key players.
From coaching role to playing XI
Christian moved into coaching after hanging up his boots, serving as an assistant coach for the Thunder. However, the recent spate of injuries has forced the club to call on its vast experience.
“I made the decision during the off-season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 leagues was never completely out of the question for me,” Christian said. “The body feels great, and I wanted to make sure I was ready if the opportunity came up.”
His preparation has been evident, with consistent performances in the UNSW Cricket New South Wales competition. Although he has not played a professional match since the Sixers' semi-final loss to the Brisbane Heat, his fitness levels have remained intact.
Injury problems are hitting Sydney Thunder hard
Sydney Thunder The injury problems began last week when Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft collided during their match against the Perth Scorchers. The accident left Sams with a concussion and Bancroft with a broken shoulder, broken nose and concussion.
The duo join a growing injury list that already includes Jason Sangha, Nick Maddinson and Tanveer Sangha. Thunder general manager Trent Copeland acknowledged the importance of Christian's return.
“We are very fortunate to already have Dan within the club,” Copeland said. “He is a legend in the BBL and we have no doubt that he is still at this level. We can't wait to see him back in this environment and make an impact.”
Elite company in the 1940s club
Christian's return sees him join an exclusive club of players to appear in Bubble In his forties. This list includes names like Brad Hogg, Brad Hodge, Peter Seidel, Fawad Ahmed and the late Shane Warne.
With 409 T20 matches in six countries under his belt, Christian brings unparalleled experience. He has represented Australia 43 times in white-ball cricket and boasts three A-League titles with Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers.
Thunder roster challenges
Adding to the Thunder's woes is the potential absence of Sam Konstas, who could receive a call-up for Test duties. The club also expects internationals Shirvan Rutherford and Lockie Ferguson to leave mid-tournament for the ILT20.
“The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was very unfortunate, but I am truly grateful for the opportunity I was given,” Christian said. “I wish them all the best in their recovery and hope they are back in the park soon.”
