“During the process of stepping down, this thing happened. I literally went through the channels and got the (acting) job,” Reese said.
“It wasn't like I had a secret plan that I wouldn't fight and I would impress people when I would act.
“I had nothing. I was at home doing self-tests for a year before anything came to fruition. It was divine timing.”
Reese grew up in an artistic family. Her father played keyboard and toured with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, her mother was a singer and ballet dancer, while her grandmother was a member of a drama club called Sitamard – dramatic spelled backwards.
“My mother used to have me in church plays. Music, dance, arts and expression were always part of my daily life at home,” Reese said.
Reese made her acting debut in Catch the Fair One before landing another role in Asphalt City, which starred Sean Penn.
Playing Evangeline Navarro – a no-nonsense police officer – alongside Jodie Foster in the hit TV series True Detective: Night Country, sent Reese into the mainstream.
Just three years after entering the world of acting, Reese is thriving.
Reese made history, along with Lily Gladstone, when she became the first Native American woman to be nominated for an Emmy this year, while also being nominated for a Golden Globe.
“I've been fortunate to be around people who are good at their craft and have the intention of being good at their job and being good human beings,” Reese said.
“With their presence and their energy, I've learned a lot. I love being the dumbest person in the room because now I'm surrounded by really smart people and all I can do is listen and watch, observe and learn.”
