Ben Godfrey: Ipswich sign the defender on loan from Atalanta for the rest of the season


Ipswich Town have completed the loan of defender Ben Godfrey from Atalanta.

The England international has joined the Premier League club on a deal until the end of the season, becoming their first signing of the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old has played just 22 minutes in Serie A since then Atalanta signed him from Everton last summer For a fee in the region of £10 million.

“I can’t wait to meet the players and get started,” said Godfrey, who has two England caps in 2021.

“I've really enjoyed speaking to the coach (Kieran McKenna) and having the opportunity to work under him now is something I'm very excited about.”

Godfrey has played a further 71 minutes in his other four appearances in all competitions, which includes two Champions League matches.

He previously made 93 appearances for Everton after joining the club in 2018 £25m transfer from Norwich In October 2020.

Godfrey attended Ipswich's 2-2 draw with Fulham on Sunday, meaning the Tractor Boys remain 18th in the Premier League, behind Wolves on goal difference.

Godfrey added: “I watched a lot of matches in the first half of the season and you can see from those matches that the group is cohesive and full of players who give everything to achieve their goals.”

He added: “I haven't played as much as I wanted to so far this season, but I feel ready to contribute and I'm looking forward to getting out of this.”
