Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has predicted Rohit Sharma's possible retirement from international cricket after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in March. Rohit Sharma's captaincy came under heavy criticism after India's 1-3 Test series loss to Australia. He was also a huge flop with the bat in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia.
Amid the hype surrounding Rohit Sharma's future after the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy debacle, Adam Gilchrist also predicted that India may see a change in the captaincy in Test cricket with Jasprit Bumrah or Virat Kohli taking over as captain during their next stint against England in June 2025.
Adam Gilchrist predicts Rohit Sharma will retire after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy
After the disastrous tour of Australia, many wondered whether the 37-year-old would join the squad for India's next Test series in England, which kicks off the new 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Well, Gilchrist expressed his doubts about Rohit Sharma's future in Tests.
The former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman has hinted that the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy could mark his success. Gilchrist does not believe Rohit will extend his Test career until the England tour, but he will get a clearer picture of his future after a self-assessment during this break.

Adam Gilchrist said on Club Prairie Fire: “I don't see Rohit Sharma going to England. I just felt like he was saying he would evaluate it when he got home. I mean the first thing he's going to see when he gets home is a two-month-old who has to change diapers. Now That might motivate him to go to England but I know I don't see him pushing it. I think he probably has a chance of winning the Champions League, and that might be the case.
Virat Kohli or Jasprit Bumrah? Adam Gilchrist comments on the dilemma of leading the Indian national team
The cricket expert also has doubts that Jasprit Bumrah will be India's full-time Test captain, as he speculated that Virat Kohli might return to the captaincy, at least for the upcoming England tour.
“I don't know if Bumrah should be a full-time captain. I think that might be a bit challenging for him. So, it's anyone's guess who the next captain will be, whether they will go back to Virat Kohli. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't mind,” he added. “Do this.”
Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan said that Jasprit Bumrah should be given the India captaincy while highlighting the team's performance under the player's leadership. He also pointed out that if Jasprit Bumrah had not been injured, India would have won the Sydney Test and saved the 2024-25 BGT against Australia.
Michael Vaughan backs Jasprit Bumrah to lead the Test in India
“I think you're right,” Michael Vaughan said on the same podcast. I will give the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah, and the reason is that the two performances that India performed at their best here in Australia were Perth and SCG. If he hadn't been injured, I honestly think they would have won that game.
Even Vaughan backed Shubman Gill as a potential vice-captain for the much-anticipated Test series. But the Englishman suggested to Gill that he should first improve his numbers in the longest format of the game. He signed off by saying: “I would have picked someone like Shubman Gill as vice-captain, but he averages over 45, which I think he has the game to do.”
