Mebude was born and raised in London. At the age of 10, his family moved to Glasgow, where his football talent was discovered early.
He grew up in Govan, began training with Rangers and became part of the Scottish FA's performance group.
As a boyhood Liverpool fan who modeled his playing style on England winger Raheem Sterling, he couldn't believe his luck when Anfield great Steven Gerrard walked through the door as coach at Ibrox.
“Looking at the age groups, I was in good shape,” Mboud said. “I was always playing a few years.
“In my second year full-time, I got a cap for the under-20s. I scored a hat-trick off the bench.
“Steven Gerrard had just arrived at the time. He was at the match and the next day I trained with the first team. It was surreal.”
Gerrard will give Mibody his first-team debut for Rangers.
However, it was always going to be difficult for the teenager to work his way ahead of the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe in the pecking order.
A loan spell at Queen of the South was followed by a move to Watford and then another loan spell with Wimbledon before a move to Belgium.
Since escaping the roadside wreck, Mebude's mission has been about rebuilding his career.
Once again, his family will play a role. He trained with his younger brother Dier, a Scotland Under-21 striker currently with Westerlo, over the summer.
The wider football family will also help him get back into the game.
“I was training at Livingston for a while,” Mebody said. “My friend Stephen Kelly plays there and we played together at Rangers. He knew my situation.
“He spoke to the manager and said: 'Do you want to come and train?' The manager, David Martindale, has been very good to me, letting me participate to keep myself fit.
“We actually had a friendly match with Dunfermline and I played in it. I was at home one day and my agent texted me to say Dunfermline were talking to him and I should come over.
“I felt at home right away. I have a good friendly group here.”
Mebude will be hoping for a final appearance for the Pars when BBC Scotland cameras visit East End Park to visit Scottish Championship leaders Falkirk on Friday.
“I hope the club sees the best in me because it was probably difficult for a lot of people to take a risk after what I went through this year,” added Mebody.
He added: “Obviously they have put a lot of trust in me and I just want to show the fans, the club and the coach what it means to me to play for the club.”
