We didn't see much of him on the final day, which is consistent with his performances in the match in recent years. He has scored one try in his last 11 matches. As a threat, it was a mirage.
This is what Edinburgh is, though? They are an illusion. A team that looks fairly strong on paper but is a team that only occasionally steps up. How many times do they have to be ridiculed for their failures before they stand up and start doing something about it?
Defeat to Glasgow at Hampden was just the latest in a long line of disappointing results. From time to time they put in a hopeful performance before falling back into mediocrity soon after. They haven't gone anywhere for a long time now.
This fact makes the renewal of Van der Merwe's lucrative contract even more questionable. Good for Scotland but not so good for Edinburgh, who could use this player to bolster their midfield and full-back, as they are so far below Glasgow's level, it's almost embarrassing.
